AT THE END OF HIS TIME Brian Tunnel wondered whether his life had been contemptible–-or just merely pathetic. But then, almost immediately after having pulled the trigger and the gun had fired, as the bullet was beginning to make its way through his brain, in that split second before both his brain and his mind were ruined, he realized that that distinction–-that those distinctions–-of meaning and semantics did not, in the end, really matter.
